Introducing the AI Adoption Readiness Guide.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant trend: it is transforming the way social-purpose organizations operate, make decisions, and deliver services. But for many impact teams, the path to adoption can be unclear. Limited resources, competing priorities, and a lack of tailored guidance often hinder responsible innovation.

To help bridge that gap, Georgetown University's Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership developed the AI Adoption Readiness Guide. This open-access resource is specifically designed for leaders who want to explore the use of AI with clarity, purpose, and alignment with their mission.

A Framework for Purpose-Driven Organizations

Rather than replicating corporate models of digital innovation, we built this approach based on interviews with social-sector leaders, public policy experts, and the most up-to-date academic and applied literature. From this work, a three-dimensional structure emerged that reflects how AI adoption actually happens in values-driven institutions:

  • Operational Efficiency: how AI can support internal processes such as data management, finance, communications, and human resources, helping overburdened teams do more with less.
  • Service Delivery: how AI can improve the way organizations interact with and support the communities they serve, through tools such as chatbots, personalized learning platforms, and machine translators.
  • Decision-Making: how AI can contribute to strategy, evaluation, and internal governance, providing insights or projections that strengthen programmatic and institutional decisions.

By organizing the journey into these three dimensions, we offer a structure that makes sense from an organizational, not just a technological, perspective. The goal is to help teams make informed decisions aligned with their mission, starting from where they are today—realities often misunderstood by industry giants.

What does the guide include?

  • A self-assessment tool aligned with the framework
  • A curated list of AI tools and examples by dimension
  • Downloadable resources such as policy templates, discussion games, and implementation checklists
  • A free, interactive platform designed for teams to explore, learn, and reflect together

Explore, use, adapt

This is a living tool, shaped by community needs. It was co-designed with social sector professionals in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region and continues to evolve based on user input and concrete experiences in the field.
